The Diary of Ma Yan: The Struggles and Hopes of a Chinese SchoolgirlThe Diary of Ma Yan: The Struggles and Hopes of a Chinese Schoolgirl by Ma Yan

This is an extraordinarily simple book to read (it's aimed at 11yo and up) and if it was fiction I wouldn't be very impressed.  But it's not - it's real and it's contents are heartbreakingly simple - a 12mile walk to and from school, one meal a day (if she's lucky) and a distinct lack of nurture from those responsible for her education.  Ma Yan's diary should be read by every overindulged spoiled child in an effort to make them appreciate what they have!
